This is a great follow-up to a project the Governors Office funded last year. Some photos below of a group of Geology students from the University of Puerto Rico accompanied by their professors Dr James Joyce and Dr Wilson Ramirez. During the Easter break the Professors led these students on Geology explorations at Katouche Bay, Limestone Quarry, Anacaona, Malliouhana and Crocus Bay. The purpose was to study the geology of Anguilla, and the fossils and minerals found on the island. The vision of using Anguilla as a geology study centre and for educational tourism was conceived by the Ministry of Tourism and facilitated by the office of HE the Governor, which funded the first Geo Science project last year. The materials that were collected and catalogued by the University professors, teaching assistants and members of the High Schools environmental club were recently displayed at the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) fair organised by the Education department. We anticipate that there will continue to be other field schools held on Anguilla and that additional universities will visit Anguilla to study the islands geology. This is a best practice indeed, and there have been positive and short term impacts, continuing more than a year later. The University has indicated that it will be happy to use Anguilla for field schools on an ongoing basis and have made recommendations for establishing a simple facility that will be required to support the visiting students. There will be new opportunities for Anguillian students interested in science to gain exposure to this field of study and benefit from the presence of these professors and students.
