This is a great version of one of the prettiest ballads of the 60s. In 1966, Johnny Rivers wrote and recorded, “Poor Side of Town.” It would be Johnny’s only #1 hit. Three years later, Al Wilson, who recorded on Johnny Rivers’ label, Soul City, would also release “Poor Side...” Al had just scored a big hit five months earlier with, “The Snake.” Rivers produced all the songs Wilson recorded for Soul City which also included “The Snake” and a remake of “Lodi.” His version of “Poor Side of Town” barely did anything on Billboard and did reach WSGN’s chart in Birmingham for two weeks in January of 1969. His vocals are spot on and I believe this song needs to be heard once again. I saw Al in concert just a couple of years before he died in 2008. He was a genuinely present man to talk to and was always smiling. He also stilled loved singing, The Snake even after 40 years.
