Kiwis being conned in broad day light Sure hope Immigration Dept staff went to bed early tonight and are at all the shopping malls first thing in the morning re Last week, Campbell Live reporter Anna Burns-Francis sought you the story of an 82-year-old woman who was bullied into buying $5000 worth of cosmetics – mostly wrinkle cream for a range of different skin types. The story led to further investigation into the sales techniques used by Dead Sea Spa employees at kiosks and shopping malls throughout New Zealand. Campbell Live can now reveal that the Dead Sea Spa workers are trained in Israel and brought to New Zealand specifically to sell products in a highly aggressive manner, designed to target New Zealanders. Anna spoke to former Dead Sea Spa workers, desperate for their identities to remain unknown. These are all young kids, straight out of military service in Israel, says Ms Burns-Francis. So this is their chance to get out and see the world and make some money at the same time – that is whats so appealing about selling Dead Sea products from their homeland that they know so well. The only problem is that they are all working in New Zealand illegally. Speaking to one of the former workers, he describes how he was originally on a visitor visa, as were about 99 percent of his co-workers with Dead Sea Spa. All of the workers live together in groups of five or six, and their only existence is to work and to hard-sell to New Zealanders. After work we would go to the managers house, and if you dont reach the target of $500 a day the managers will go off at you, says the former employee. You also get punished if you dont meet target, like not being able to work the next day. Its public humiliation if you fail yet adoration if you succeed at reaching daily targets. All of this is cash commission, says Ms Burns-Francis. The workers go to the managers house on a Sunday evening where they receive cash in hand. Watch the full report.
