This is a poem I wrote a little while ago. Thought some of you might enjoy it. Where I’m from I am from the dust from the dirt in the round pen I am from the saddle, that I make a living out of I am from the hills that surround me where horses and cows roam and where I roam with them I am from a snorting colt from the bone jolting jumps he takes I am from the many loops I’ve thrown from the many loops that have missed and the many that landed where I wanted them The mistakes I have made The successes I have had I am from Cowboy country from the generations before that made a living here, and whose history I have taken I am from chaps, boots, and spurs From ropes, saddles, and cowboy boots The tools of my trade I am from the hard winters from the deep snow, and weak cattle from the work I put in the joy and the pay I get from it I am from the early mornings and late nights from the boiling coffee and the steaming steaks From the calloused hands of my grandfather to the muddy pens in which I do my toil I wake up in the morning drink my hot black coffee I put on my boots and spurs, chaps, and my cowboy hat I step outside into the cold brisk morning Saddle the next horse in my string I climb on and buck him out the corral gate Soon we are surrounded by the cows and the hills Surrounded by cowboy country This is where I’m from -Cahill Ellenwood
