This is a really great piece about the impact the release of The Exorcist had in 1973/74. Viewers today may not get the hysteria created by the film, but The Exorcist created something in the air that shook some viewers to their core during its original run. As director William Friedkin has stated, word of mouth generated an atmosphere of dread that laid the groundwork for the film even before audiences entered the theatre.
