This is a reminder for the next AFCEA London Chapter meeting which will be held at HMS President (Shore Establishment) on 24th October 2013. Our speaker for the evening will be from the NATO Shipping Centre. NATO Shipping Centre – combating piracy and terrorism – new roles in a new world Did you know that over 90% of world trade goes by sea, and that modern day piracy is a real threat to that trade with almost 200 hundred incidents reported so far in 2013 – 10 of which resulted in ships being hijacked? And did you know that NATO has been running Operation Ocean Shield since 2008 to counter piracy in the Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden and Horn of Africa? Did you also know that, under Operation Active Endeavour, NATO has, since 2001, been conducting maritime ops in the Mediterranean to deter, defend, disrupt and protect against terrorist activity? And finally – did you know that NATO’s permanent merchant shipping information fusion centre – the NATO Shipping Centre, or NSC - which plays a fundamental role in both of these operations, has its home just outside London at Northwood? On 24 October, our speaker will present to us on the work of the NSC and its role in the ongoing operations against terror and piracy. Apart from being very interesting in itself, this talk also fits well with our new season’s theme “Return to contingency”, in which we consider the future of the armed forces (and supporting industries) in a post-Afghanistan world. NATO itself is no stranger to “transformation” and this presentation will give us an insight in to how the organisation has adapted to meet the emerging needs of a changing world – and how it is working with many other agencies, both government and civilian, to deliver results . As previously circulated, the London Chapter AGM will also take place during the evening. The latest information on AFCEA London events is always available at afcea.org.uk/london-events/.
