This is a repost from Jan 12. I am voting NO Well a nice example of representative government for those that have been following this. Not sure that we will net any real savings overall with the -100k to have this election. I found that when exploring the facts that the information the opposition presented as did the state. Will be adding another voting day to my calendar. And hope that the back lash of this call out doesnt end up with the maximum limit increase being imposed each year. January 12 at 1:05pm · Like .. Glenda Wilson Cindy. Did I no. Do I think it was legit. Yes. Seem to contradict but. When I looked at the info their complaint is valid. Its complicated to explain but the dollar amount they based the increase on was a glitch in time a one time expense of sorts. But there are two buckets involved. One caused the concern, And the state agrees as I do by the strict interpretation it is something that is allowed for in the law. However, its an expensive lesson for principle (although I have paid my fair share on defending principle) and the commissioner do have the power to increase 8% per year legally. I dont think it is a practice that they generally impose. But we can get that info if you like. Going forward we will all have to see what they do in years to come. The budget issues may force several years of 8%. Which may be necessary. But I wont really like more taxes. January 12 at 1:20pm · Like .. Perhaps a refund check? January 12 at 10:51pm · Like .. Glenda Wilson Well. April 8,2014 is the day to vote to rollback the tax rate. In Bowie county. So what does a yes vote really mean. It will mean we have paid - 100k to hold the election and will have to pay to have an estimated 45k refund checks mailed to property owners at an undetermined expense. The refunds will be approximately .02 per hundred dollars ...so on a $100k property you can expect a $20 refund. Those with frozen property taxes will most likely not see any refund. In addition the county will lose the 500k in taxes collected. This is not support of a yes or no vote. Simply to inform you on the consequence of your vote and the intimate price. January 16 at 2:14pm · Edited · Like .. Glenda Wilson 500K in lost tax collected above the legal limit of 8% + what I would estimate 450K to issue checks and administer the refunds for the next 3 years until unredeemed funds are turned over to the state in their unclaimed monies account. A cool million dollar spend. January 16 at 2:22pm · Like .. Susan Fields I just have to put in my 2 cents worth and will probably regret it BUT - I agree the county should have followed the law to begin with and we do need the rollback election to correct the mistake. However, I also understand Glendas math and that the county made a very costly mistake. We should remember that when we vote for county officials in future elections. As to why the county needs to raise taxes at all to pay for county expenses, that is a whole other ball of wax that entails efficient running of all county departments. But I would not want to do without critical services rather than raise taxes. Taxes are the price we pay for roads, bridges, police protection, judges to oversee our courts, and a host of other necessary services that do not come cheap. January 16 at 3:39pm · Edited · Unlike · 3 .. Glenda Wilson Susan Fields you have been silent for far to long in my opinion. You bring a nice perspective to the issues at hand. Sometime no matter how efficient you are there isnt enough to go around. efficiencies are an ongoing moving target and sometime it come to choices. I agree there are some things that we just have to pay the price. It will truly be up to the voters on how wisely they handle this issue and vote in the upcoming elections and in my opinion whether to pay the price to right a wrong. January 16 at 4:31pm · Like .. Cindy Helms Patterson Whats the consequence if the no vote wins? January 17 at 11:57am · Like .. Glenda Wilson Well.... I would say you proved your point by getting it on the ballot (a win on principle and the law) and you dont cost the county another million of debt. Some say the amount is a little less around 750K but still a pretty big chunk to add to the already big hole we are in. And you wont get your~ $20 refund check. I think it would be a huge step toward working together for the greater good. the understanding that in the last election that we were all about change and bringing in the new idea. Thats all well and good but with any new job there is a learning curve and training is most times expensive. While I am sure all these candidates are well intentioned it takes time to learn. In my option we are paying for our mistakes at the polls ( no individual candidates but the group as a whole) EVERYONE was learning there was no one left to guide or provide leadership. Its not that those before didnt make mistakes... we all do. But you learn from mistake and hopefully dont repeat them. Experience does have value, even if you make a few mistakes along the way. To get things done everyone has to work together for the greater good. January 17 at 1:27pm · Like .. Cindy Helms Patterson I dont need the 20 refund to turn around and pay more if they use the 8%. If I understand you right we should vote no. Tell me if Ive got this wrong. January 17 at 1:45pm · Like .. Glenda Wilson Cindy... I would never presume to tell you or anyone else HOW they should vote. I just try to let you know to the best of my ability what your vote means. And that it is VERY IMPORTANT to VOTE. On the surface rolling back your taxes sounds like we would all surely want that, but if we can look at the bigger picture making them pay for the mistake really means we the tax payers will be paying $$$$$. Some will say that they should pay by giving us back the 500K and pay ~ 1 million to do it. I hope that folks will pay attention to the upcoming elections... it will be here before you know it and with most everyone running on the republican ticket... most if not all elections will be determined in the March 4 primary. The straw poll (mock election in you will) date has been set for Feb 15, in New Boston and I would encourage all to attend. Its a political tradition that we might all consider participating in, everyone is invited... a little food, a chance to hear all the candidates and play a little what if the vote was today game with your straw vote. Glenda Wilson Cindy... I think you do... we will already be out ~100K for the election. yes vote get you a refund~ $20 and cost the country ~1 million dollars give or take. A no vote = no refund country keeps the 500K they already collected and no more expense on this issue. You mentioned the 8% tax increase ... they can legally assess this amount annually this vote will not change that they have the option to raise it up to the 8%. Although historically I dont think they usually take the max allowed but if we put ourselves in debt another million Im not sure how they can avoid it. Perhaps some of the commissioners can weigh in on this either here or privately. Be sure to ask them to explain both sides of the issue. The folks that stood up to bring this issue to the sleeping masses should be commended for their efforts to right a wrong , and the system did work. sometimes a moral victory is all you get. I rarely see gray in the scales of right and wrong. I am a very simple minded person and I dont think county money should be moved from one shoe box (account) to another shoe box at the commissioners whim and fancy. I have NEVER met a tax increase I liked mainly because I firmly believe .90 cents of every tax dollar gets wasted or misused in some form or fashion in every form of government from city halls all the way to Washington D.C.. Politicians like writing checks with other peoples money. January 17 at 6:00pm · Like .. It is a right that is the backbone of our blessed existence as Americans. I will vote against an increase every time and for a rollback 99.9% of the time! but that is me. Every voter should weigh their conscious and vote their heart. January 17 at 6:27pm · Unlike · 1 .. Glenda Wilson Dennis.. I 100% agree that monies could be spent more wisely and the time to look at it isnt after it is spent, we pick them by our vote to write the checks but so many time we dont get involved until the money is spent. I liken it to giving your kid a debit card on YOUR bank account and never checking to see what they have purchased. Some kids will get you in the hole quick. Rollback elections are very rare thank goodness... .perhaps because no one takes the time and energy to right a wrong and make it happen. And I believe that if you incur a $million dollar hit paying for it isnt a wise spend and its coming out of our bank accounts the citizens get nothing from that spend. Thanks for commenting ... SEE YA AT THE POLLS!!!! January 17 at 6:44pm · Like .. Glenda Wilson Cindy... believe me the people have sent a powerful message by having this vote. Some are leaving office and some will remain and those that must face the voters in this election cycle know that a small group of folks were watching how things were going. Those that are coming in will have to deal with the issues of paying for this mess, a mess they didnt create. If you vote to leave them in to fix it or out because of the action is yet to be seen. We will Im afraid ultimately have to pay in this case it just going to be how much. I guess 100k to send a message is one thing but another900K for what? More debit for us to pay.
