(This is a repost from another FB guitar group) Guitar Amp Techs/Engineers: I am trying to figure out what kind of dummy load to either eventually buy or build to test amps with an 8Ω speaker so I can troubleshoot the amp while powered up but not making a bunch of noise. I have found some 120W loads for sale that are very pricey and I have found some that are not. From an engineering standpoint, I have been told that using a dummy load may not be best idea due to the fact that amps are designed to operate into speakers NOT a power resistor. Since a speaker is a reactive load, theoretically it would behave differently than a power resistor (aka dummy load) at different volumes and frequencies. Power resistors are measured in DC resistance and speakers are measured in AC Impedance. This seems to make sense to me but I would really like some input from people that are able to elaborate more on this from experience. I am also curious as to how handy they can come in and why. Here is a video example of a low-cost, somewhat homemade dummy load I have come across. As mentioned previously, I have come across many variations on the 8Ω dummy load. Thoughts??? https://youtube/watch?v=5gAUuLkc1ik
