This is a sad but very important post from Brett Harris, and while it is aimed at PE anglers I think it has some pointers for all anglers targeting sharks - Hiya PE Fishermen, This is not a great picture, sadly the view offered to the public walking past something Good this weekend. Looking at the early season catches this year is going to deliver some amazing catches. Some huge Raggies are being caught, many in excess of 200kg. This time of year many of the females are heavily pregnant...literally bursting at the seams! Although Rags are quite hardy fish we as anglers do not want to take their time out the water for granted having the public see the beaches littered with these images. Please take note of the following points and in addition apply some common sense. 1 - Dont get these big fish up and out the shore line water. Getting a big fish back to the water can use those valuable min between successful release and a dead shark. 2 - Sharks have no skeleton to carry their heavy weights out of the water. Pressures on their organs, especially pregnant females, can cause damage. Try keeping your catch in the shore line for the pics and release. 3 - Have a plan of where you intend to land your shark and have all the equipment and tools handy in a carry bag to ensure a quick release. 4 - Never lift and hang sharks by the tail, that clicking sound is their cartilage being damaged. 5 - Dont pull sharks back to the water by the tail only. Look to pull on them evenly using the other fins as well. 6 - Do all your heavy pulling or pushing into deeper water when the swell is around the shark, ankle deep water makes the world of difference to safely move the big fish. 6 - Your catches should be out the water for a max of 2-5 min if you want them to be released strongly. 7 - If you are new to shark fishing tag along with the many PE Fishermen experienced enough to show you the tips and ropes. Chaps Im no bunny hugger and realise this sport and recreation is actually a blood sport...fish will die? We as fishermen dont require the added attention of Joe public and the sight of a washed up sharks on a public beaches could see the closure of some of our best inner city spots! Keep it organised, fish the right tackle, act fast and logical and...happy days!
