This is a short documentary that tells the story of Silvano Grandi, a 79-year old jazz piano player from Arezzo Italy. During the month of July, 2014 I took two classes at the Accademia dellArte in Arezzo, Italy. One of them was a class on documentary filmmaking taught by Federico Siniscalco, a local documentarian and film teacher. With a time limit of five minutes, I made this film initially because I was interested in italian music. I wanted to make a film that showed what the overall music culture in Arezzo was like through the lens of a single musician. As I got acquainted with Silvano and advanced through the process, I had a change of heart. I decided to instead simply make the film personally focused, with a primary goal of telling a single individuals story. Not only was this a more focused subject and more practical for a five minute time limit, it was simply more interesting. Silvano had been through so much and was such a strong, fascinating, good-humored person that to not make the film solely about him would be an injustice to the story. Thanks to Federico Siniscalco, Silvano Grandi, and the Accademia dellArte for everything. Without them this story wouldnt be documented. Anyways, enjoy!
