This is a song I wrote about not being badgered or worn into a diminished identity as a woman. Galatea is the name of the statue Pygmalion carved, and originally I named this song “Not Galatea”. No More Heroes Maybe I will miss this plane; could be my saving grace if I do. Maybe I’ve been trying in vain to be someone else’s walking shoes. It could be time to make a break from this river of heroes that speak their mind over mine. No more mamma tiger blues: I’m through with idols and adoring. Much as I fear, I’m cutting loose: I’ve cut the binding and the mooring. I’m fully flown: I guess I’ve grown to hate the clutches of your need for me to need you, bleed for you and seed for you. Get thee behind me: I toss aside the shroud of loving you. My mama said she’d come to the quick; I never had time to get used to it. My mama she done come and gone; long time lost, her lovin arms. My mama left me in a dead end zone. Aint got nothing even looks like home. I don’t know why I’ve been waiting so long; I can’t be the woman you never were. Too much to ask, you had a chance, and I don’t want to die like you— unrealized, untrue to who I am. No more. No more heroes at my door. No more of their wisdoms and their wars— salty talk and bitter tales—they regale me with love derailed. Dream demons in disguise, in their fury they rise to chide me. Fie, I’ll take the strange: I’ll be a changeling in disgrace. Men come to my door, adoring, wide eyed with boys’ delight. What they see is no more me than paradise. I don’t want to be there when they stumble on the sight that I am not a goddess, not a vision, not a stone, but blood and bone just like their own. Should I be an icon, I’ll be the queen of swords. One hand on the lion, I’ll rule with tender force. I’ll wear the robes of Justice, all red with blood and love. But I’ll never be an angel, shining from above.
