This is a terrible thing for the family, the hiking community and the bears. Studies show that the likelihood of this bear attacking would have been slim to none if they would have stayed in a group and stood their ground against this bear. Please research the areas you are going to hike from flora to fauna. And then find out how to protect yourself and how to react in an emergency from any dangers in that area.
