This is a tragedy. Geoff Lawton and Bill Mollison have taught that soil erosion is a more critical problem than removal of ecosystems or pollution. Healthy ecosystems rely on healthy soil, and vast amounts of pollution are mitigated by healthy ecosystems. Destructive commercial farming practices tend to contribute to soil loss, and require heavy external inputs of fertilizer to maintain productivity. Permaculture systems pattern after natural ecosystems which create healthy soil both in quantity and quality.
