This is a travesty. The scrapping (not salvaging) of these World War II shipwrecks is not only destroying important archaeological sites, without proper regard to the dead, its ruined an artificial reef habitat that had become the livelihood of local fishermen. The Japanese gunboat Chosa Maru, which sunk in August 1943, and the Japanese light cruiser Kuma, which went down on January 1944, have already been scrapped and several more are in immediate danger. They are being illegally scrapped using crane barges with grabs.
