This is a video showing how we use the patented Ford Puppy Treat Dispensing Technique to create positive associations between treats and wanted behaviors. We also use space claiming to let the pups know that we dont care for them jumping on or biting on us, but good manners develop even faster when we show them what we do want as well as what we dont want. We prefer our pups to WANT to keep their feet on the ground, as opposed to staying down because they expect to be punished. This is also an opportunity to build trust instead of demanding respect. Of course, puppies can become super exuberant and out of control, so we like to take them on a hike before beginning to show them how to get treats by being well mannered. Once they are a little tired and have burned off that extra mental energy, they are in a much better place to learn. This is the first time I have done this exercise with these pups and some are just learning their names. So I say their new name, hand them a treat and when they pop up for a second treat, I keep their attention with my hand and wait for the right moment to pop it in there mouths (when their feet are on the ground, sitting or standing). I also toss them a handful of treats when I call them and they all come running. This also serves as an exercise for them to use their noses to find the treats in the grasses.
