This is absolutely disgusting. A living wage would be roughly 11 dollars an hour for full time 40 hours a week. This would allow families to pay rent buy food and buy medical insurance for themselves. Walmart does not need a defense because their actions are indefensible. For those people against raising minimum wage to 12 or 15 dollars an hour lets do the math on this. Walmart made net 17 billion this year roughly. They have 1.4 million workers there some making over 15 an hour, since 15 is the higher number I will do the math on that for you. We are going to assume a WORST case scenario that all 1.4 million are working 40 hours a week at the 8.80 an hour they claim to have as an average for non skilled jobs. That means a raise of 6.20 an hour to reach that wage. With 40 hour week and an increase of 6.20 an hour that means each worker makes 248 more a week times 52 weeks in the year is 12,896 more a year per employee. Multiply that by 1.4 million and your total is 18,155,200,000. Now I know you are thinking what?! Walmart can not afford to do that!!!!!! Are you kidding me you just said they made 17 billion in profit only!!! You commi asshole you are stealing from the rich go back to soviet russia!!! My response to you would be this. Where do you think that extra 18 billion is going to go? Back into walmart. It is still a cheap place to buy goods. Even if only 1/10th goes back into walmart that is 1.8 billion dollars, and lets face it that is severely conservative for a guesstimate. I would also say that walmart doesnt have 1.4 million employees at full time. Most are only part time, dont forget to walmart full time is only 34 hours a week. So realistically speaking the numbers would go more along the lines of 10-14 billion more spending for living wages, this time a very liberal estimate based on average employee work week and current pay, which you can look up from walmarts own site. So they would still have a minimum 3-7 billion dollar profit plus an additional billion or two from the employees spending money back into walmart. Overall walmart will still be looking at 5-9 billion dollars in profit. Now, tell me again how a handful of people need 9 billion dollars to live yet a family of 4 on 22,000 a year is perfectly just.
