This is an embryonic idea but one that has been with me for some time. Do we need a national grid? There are three CCGT plants on Deeside. Each provides between 500 & 600Mw. In terms of homes thats a hell of a lot but Im going to provide a worst case. 50A/ home. A stretch I know but when 32A can be the cooker... (Fused to 40A). Remember there are two 32A ring mains too. So yes Im stretching it to a possible maximum. About 5,000 homes, worst case. Drax is about 4Gw, it requires some serious power lines, even after transforming. Apart from Selby, theres not a lot nearby. Doncaster is a fair way away, dittto York. Smaller CCGT plants closer to the end user with the national grid being just a balancing arm is one step towards what we need. We dont need to transmit power over distance, that will get rid of the pylons!
