This is an encounter from a friend of mine, he does not want his named use, and I have a lot of respect for him My 1st Encounter 1969. October 15, 2013 at 1:00pm First let me start this off by saying that I grew up in a small S/E Texas town close to the Louisiana border. My cousins and I spent our childhood hunting, camping, and fishing the lakes, woods, bayous, and rivers of both S/E & N/E Texas .I also spent alot of summers with my kin folk in South Louisiana. My great aunt and uncle owned 85 acres in N/E Texas near the border. The property was about half way between Fouke,Ark and Oil City,La. and my uncle farmed and had livestock on it.I used to travel with my grandfather there quite a bit to visit his sister and brother-in-law.Most of us younger boys had shot and killed our 1st deer and hog there. It was later part of August before I would start my 1st yr of High School and I was 13 yrs old at the time.My grandfather and I left on a friday to help my uncle repair some bad fencing and out building.I was also going to stay a week or so with them to help them with small things that needed to be taken care of and to help my uncle prepare a feed plot for the upcomming deer season. We arrived later in the day and I spent the next few days doing small chores around the house and out buildings and hunting for snakes around the property.Near the small creek that ran thru the property there was an abundance of timber rattlers, water moccasins, and copperheads. My aunt despised snakes terribly and she would buy me all the 22 shells I wanted to get rid of them.My grandad left on Sunday and I stayed to help out.Monday morning we redisced the field where we were planting the food plot and planted iron/clay peas.It was very dry that summer and we actually took a small pump and hoses to irrigate the pea patch. The field was about 2 acres in size total, narrower on one end a very wide on the other. The field had once been an old holding pen area with the remains of an old corral fence on the creek side. Most of the fence was gone with the exception of high brush where it had once been and some large 4x6 post about 4.5 tall. The creek was only about 65 or 70 from the field where we were planting.Near the old fence the ground sloped down towards the creek bottom. After we had planted the peas we ran the pump pretty much the rest of the day having to go back and forth to and from creek to clean out the strainer. The day went by pretty much with nothing out of the ordinary.A cpl years before my uncle had actually shot a black bear near the field closest to the creek. The next morning we were in the field around 8:30 and had begun to lay out the barb wire for the temporary fence around the feed plaot. We had already pounded about a dozen green T-post in the ground to start the run.We were only putting 2 low strands up as it was only to keep the cows and stray hogs out till the peas got a good start. We had been working about an hour when I went to back of truck to get us a cpl soft drinks.I never made it to the back of the truck.Out of the blue there was a loud crash then a low growl that gradually increased to a very loud roar.It was like a tiger or lions roar only about 5 times louder and deeper. It seemed to reverberate through the field and surrounding woods. It caused us both to turn towards the far end of the field. What came out of the woods was a total shock and unlike anything I had ever seen before. This creature was around 8 tall covered in black stringy hair which hung down off his shoulders and covered most of his face. The hair sorta reminded me of an orangutans hair except it was very unkept and matted in some places. He was huge and powerfully built. Not like a bodybuilder type but more squattier and thicker. He had a waist but not a slim waist .I would guess that he weighed around 650 to 700 # .His arms were huge and he was probably over 36 across the shoulders. His head seemed to be part of his shoulders as he didnt have a neck.He was probably pissed off about something and came out of the brush like a small bull dozer swatting at brush and trees and pulling up from the ground whatever he could. He moved towards us till he was about 3 from the edge of the old fence line on opposite side of field. At that time we noticed another shorter creature emerge from behind him and stop about 20 from the far side of the field. The larger one began growling and moving down the old fence towards us he would stop every so often and tear at the surrounding brush throwing it towards us and to the side.he would squat down and pound the ground beside and in front of him and pull up grass .He would almost be totally obscured at times with dust and dirt flying. His thighs were enormous and probably as big around as my waist. When he rose back up to move he just stood up never using his hands to assist him.All the while this was happeneing he was closing the gap between us and him.It seemed like he moved with a sideways shufflng gait and only turned fully in our direction twice during the whole encounter. When he looked at us he would look at us with his head sort of cocked to one side and snarl and growl.I can only describe what I was seeing as a mega temper tantrum by the creature and there was a look of total rage in his eyes. The other creature just stayed in opposite side of field and I would guess he was maybe 7 and 600# more squattier built.I cannot give you much description of it only that it was a rusty brown color and not as unkept as the bigger one. Also its hair seemed to shine in the sun.The creature continued moving towards us and at around 60 from us wen down into a crouch and slapped at one of the old fence posts.he then wrapped his had around it and pulled it staright up out of the ground and over his head hitting the ground and waving it out to the side. The amount of strength required to do that I can only imagine. My uncle said they were in the ground about 18 to 20 and all total about 5.5 long.I am sure they must have weighed around 80#.The creature hurled it end over end into the woods towards the pump and you could here it tumbling down the slope end over end till it splashed into the creek. It took about 2 more strides and stood almost directly in front of the truck.Maybe 50 away from us and let out a roar that I could feel vibrate my whole body.I do not remember being scared but was probably in total shock and disbelief at what was taking place. The scream seemed to echo in the field and woods and It kinda made me nauseas in the stomach.I then became aware of my uncle who had moved slightly behind me and got his shotgun from the truck.I was too involved at what was happenening in front of me to notice much of anything else.I then saw from corner of my eye my uncle come around my left side and slide over in front of me.The creature just stared at us with rage in his eyes.I got the impression he was fixing to charge at us.He let out a growl and looked in the direction of the other one wnd I remember hearing my uncle say they are trying to flank us. I turned my head to look at the other one and saw him thru the window of the truck moving parallel to us down the woodline. The direction he was going was only access in or out of the field except the woods. The sound of the shot shocked me back around and I saw the bark and dust fly from the tree beside the creature. The distance from him to tree was only about 3 or less.I am not so sure that a few stray buckshot did not graze him.My uncle took a half step forward and saidI know you may not understand me but I know you know what this is.Dont you? From that moment it was totally different. The creature stood up fully facing us head on.It had a look of hate on its face a snarled at us.It just stood there and stared at us letting out a very low growl.I could hear its breathing from all the exertion it was so close. My uncle pushed the gun forward and the creature seemed to understand. It slowly backed up kinda sideways till it reached the woods then turned and walked away.We could hear it snarling and popping its teeth and splashes in creek the we heard nothing. My uncle just stood there staring out into the woods where it went.He told me to get in truck on this side and I did. He backed up to the truck and got in behind me.My heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my ears.I was mazed as my uncle seemed calm and collected. He looked over at me and said well guess thats about it for the day.WE drove out towards the road out and never saw them again that day.About half way to house he turned a little towards me and saidBet that guys gonna have some sore hands tomorrow huh Bull. When we got to house my aunt was on porch waiting for us and asked if we had had company,I remember her saying that she had heard a scream right before the shooting started.I have really never talked about what happened to many people but my uncle, aunt, and grandpa.Of the 5 people that knew about it all but 2 are gone now.You can laugh at me and call me a liar or say I imagined it I really dont care.I know what I saw that hot Aug.day and I will never forget it.Over the yrs I saw it 2 other times but never like the 1st time.I have always been a no-kill person where these creatures are concerned.I read where people say they are gentle and harmless. Please take some advice from me.Dont go into the woods unarmed.I dont I may not have enough firepower to put one down for good if the situation turns bad but I have about 18 opportunities for him to change his mind.
