End Of Watch. 2012. Michael Pena, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anna Kendrick. If you read the blurb Netflix puts on its webpage about this movie, you might think Great, another boring cop flick in LA. Thats what I thought, too. But I like Jake Gyllenhaal, and did a bit more research, and learned that this movie just might have something, so I rented it. Good move, Howard. Really good move. The friendship that these two cops share while driving the streets of LA is what at first draws you in to this movie....then, the calls start to come in and you see what two street cops face during an average day in one of the roughest gang areas in our country (sure, it is embellished a bit, but it feels authentic). All types of strange things happen to them, and most of it is handled professionally and with the ultimate goal of doing things right. And that is mostly what this very realistic feeling movie is about. And that in itself is a bit unique and makes for a good flick. Until the end, when one of their cases gets the better of them and they interfere with a few thugs who are much bigger than they are. Fortunately, I didnt think any of this movie dragged; it was always on the move, building suspense as one never really knows how a 911 call will end. Yes, the movie is full of profane language, so if that offends, steer clear. But if you can live with that, and need to catch a good flick about cops battling the bad guys, then certainly rent this one. I was nicely surprised.
