This is an issue I am incredibly passionate about. I ask that you please take a moment to sigh the petitions I have posted. One is for Jennifer Goodall, the woman this article is about. The other is for a friend who is personally being affected by a VBAC ban at her local hospital. Petition links will be in the comments. There are three main points Id like to make with this: 1) As a consumer of healthcare, you should be in control of the care you receive. Informed consent and refusal are your rights. Under no other circumstances would it be considered ethical to force a person to undergo surgery, especially when there is no true medical need for the surgery. 2) A. VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) is NOT a procedure. Pushing your baby from your body is the natural, normal outcome of pregnancy. The evidence supporting the safety of VBAC is abundant therefore, the desire to VBAC is not selfish. B. Cesarean section is NOT procedure. It is a major abdominal surgery and needs to be regarded as such. Cesarean carries not just the usual risk of most surgeries such as bleeding, infection, and damage to organs neighboring your uterus, but also puts you and your future children at risk of (potentially deadly) placental abnormalities in any and all future pregnancies. Cesareans are not evil. Im very thankful they exist. But, they are incredibly overused, putting women and babies at risk unnecessarily. 3) Why, in a country in which it is perfectly legal to kill unborn children if the mother desires, is a woman being threatened and bullied for choosing a method of birthing her child that her local hospital/provider doesnt approve of? I can not wrap my mind around the logic of this. Even if the VBAC was risky and this was all happening to protect the unborn child, it still wouldnt make sense when the mother could have legally chosen to have the child killed and removed from her uterus a few weeks before.
