This is an issue that should not and can not be ignored... In the course of a candidly honest conversation I was having with the bartender at thanksgiving lunch, after the countless discussions Ive had with teachers and parents and students all across the spectrum, I told a good guy with a 2 year old daughter that Id rather *not have kids* than transfer so much ownership for so many of their formative years to the urban public school system. And he seemed almost relieved that somebody else shared his same reservations. I invited him to join the group so if he shows up and calls me a jackass then it would speak to my cluelessness. But school. Cant it be better? Should we really be so concerned with hammering every creative girl and boy with or without that precocious spark into this shiny manufactured concept we call aproductivememberofsociety, or should we take a look at this decaying institutional monster weve kept alive through a dubious mix of bureaucratic necromancy and the crushed souls of our children and say that its time to finally lay the beast to rest? I think its well past time for the learning system to be cut from the red tape. So the best way Ive come up with of seeing that happen is to make a better model, do it, then show it off. Ive already had some great conversations with several of you about the idea and what we can implement, and Im very curious to see what we can bring to life in 2015 and 16. This is an issue that should not and can not be ignored. Edit: Almost forgot to thank Austin James Palazzo for passing this my way. I just cant shake the feeling that we are, in some part, so obsessed culturally with the zombie phenomenon because we feel so disquieted already by the overwhelming presence of these unthinking, shambling institutions that are necessarily obligated to seek out and consume our minds because they were once so consumed. I cant be okay with this.
