This is an older article but still very true and important. It brings home some of the points that we have been trying to make. Growing and buying local is so important and we need to support our local Farmers to make this possible. Residents moving into agricultural areas need to be aware that the methods and techniques of Farming are ever changing so just because a certain FARM activity wasnt happening when they moved into the area doesnt mean that it wont or cant happen in the future. Residents encroaching on farm land should not be given the right to determine what activities they consider to be an acceptable form of farming and the Farmers should not be restricted from new and necessary methods. Especially ones that are clearly accepted in the ALC Regulations. FARMERS HAVE TO ADAPT TO CHANGING TIMES!! Meaning new and different techniques to be sustainable and to grow more crops. We need local farms that have the capability to grow year long so that we dont have to rely so much on imports. This is one of the reasons why we felt that composting was so important and valuable to our area. Not only by diverting the material from the Landfill but also by creating an organic fertilizer for the farm land which proved to be so amazingly beneficial, saving over 4 million gallons of water just to name one!! Who knows what the Environmental Savings would be at today had there been adequate support here, as there has been in Cobble Hill, Chemainus as well as some on the Mainland and other areas. It is certainly not all about composting. There are many areas of farming that require adaptation and change. If we want to supply locally grown products year long then we are going to require farm lands with greenhouses, we are going to require local abattoirs among many others and it is important for Residents and Governing Bodies to support and encourage these changes and operations. Our food security depends on it. vancouversun/news/Climate+change+impact+agriculture+study/8455586/story.html
