This is another one of my ideas: Theory of Consciousness - TopicsExpress

This is another one of my ideas: Theory of Consciousness Based on a Theory of Dream Formation I believe that Rapid Eye Movement, or R.E.M. is the main cause of dream imagery formation. Dreams dont produce R.E.M., R.E.M. produces dream imagery. Scientists have determined that when you see something in a dream, you look with your physical eyes in the same direction as if you were awake and it was happening right in front of you. For example, if you were dreaming that you were watching a tennis game, your physical eyes would move back and forth in the same direction that the tennis ball was being hit. But R.E.M., I believe, is also the primary producer of dream imagery. Heres how: There is a property in crystals, with an asymetric lattice structure, called the piezo-electric effect. When pressure or heat is applied to one axis of the crystal, an electrical output is discharged from the other axis of the crystal. The piezo-electric property is used in radio towers for F.M. or frequency modulation, of radio waves, to be amplified and sent through the airways. I believe that the rods and cones of the retina are like tiny piezo-crystal structures and when we first fall to sleep our eyes begin to move, at first involuntarily, like the paralysis that our whole body goes under during sleep. But behind the vitreous humor of the eye balls, the rods and cones are pressed, ever so lightly, by the movement of our eye balls during R.E.M. in a smooth but haphazard way. This, in turn, produces electrical output from the retina to the optic nerve and into the visual cortex. The images produced are completely random and are likened to seeing fast moving cloud formations and intricate geometric paterns of which the brain interprets in a best-match scenerio to the visual fragments stored all over the brain in memory. Press in on your eyeballs and you will see geometric patterns, this is the piezo-electric effect at work and noticable. The symmetry produced in the geometric patterns are the result of a main focus of pressure extending outward on the retina. The images picked up from the random retina patterns are like television snow. Infact, you can even see dream imagery at work if you looked, in a relaxed manner, at television snow. It looks like another channel is coming into reception, but it is infact dream imagery being formed. But then the process is reversed. The image brought into the minds eye by the initial R.E.M., like the tennis match, causes the dreamer to move his or her eyes in the direction of action, this I call voluntary R.E.M. And the result is another pattern of cloud formations making their way to the visual cortex for decyphering based on a best-match scenerio to other bits of memory stored in the brain. Altogether, it starts to create something like a motion picture with each scene connected to the next. This, I believe, is the physics of dream imagery formation. This is why dreams sometimes take on illogical or paradoxical themes; sometimes a memory bit just doesnt match up logically to another bit of memory ( the hypnogogic state is actually the first formations of dream imagery through involuntary R.E.M.). And its not just with vision but every other sense as well. But with vision, if you could somehow immobolize the eyes,at the outset of the dream, dreams would either be stopped altogether or be severely stunted. But after dreaming for a long time it starts to become automatic. At least this will happen to the visual part of the dream. I also believe that we are dreaming constantly, wheather awake or asleep but we are on too high a level of awareness; the alpha wave, to be consciously aware of the piezo-electric induced dreams and the input of our conscious effect on those sub-conscious dreams. But they are still working, still creating random best-match scenerios to its input and the memories we have stored in our heads. The sub-conscious state is just another name for constant dreaming that we are mostly unaware of. This non-stop dreaming under the level of consciousness is what I think is the subconscious first created from dream imagery formation which is first created from involuntary R.E.M. and then eventually by voluntary R.E.M. We are always connected to the sub-conscious but mainly thru a-ha moments when our thoughts distill an idea seemily out of no-where. It is actually a split-second moment of lucidity when we can see what our sub-conscious is creating. It happens all of the time during rare lucid dreaming states. When whats happening outside our heads sort of match up to whats going on inside our heads it brings a moment of lucidity, just as in lucid dreaming. We must have thousands of lucid moments during the day to connect with whats being created in the sub-conscious to the awakened conscious level. Ive had my eyes dialated at the optometrist for eye exams and Ive also been on LSD. Visually they are both the same. When LSD dialates your eyes you get to experience the dream-forming capacity of fast moving cloud-formations. When my eyes were dialated from the eye doctor I took off my shades and stared at the speckles on my friends wall and they started to form intricate patterns of cartoonish-like skeletons and lizards weaving in and out of each other. Thats about the same things that I saw during LSD trips. When we see things through dialated eyes there is a effect called persistent positive image that keeps a bit of visual imformation intact, for a time, as the eyes scan another part of the scenery, combining the two visual stimuli creates cloud-formation type effects through R.E.M., even during times when you are awake. Constantly scanning your environment while your eyes are dialated increases the amount of stimuli in persistent positive image form and thus creates what appears to be fast-moving cloud-formations that your mind interprets as other objects due to a best-match scenerio to bits of stored memory. We are constantly scanning our environment and it would be very hard to stop because you are doing it, for the most part, involuntarily. In effect, it is the awakened counterpart of dream R.E.M. I call LSD a universal dialator because it dialates everything; all of our senses including our sense of time as well as other dimensions of thought. Its just a dialator. Our eyes see the same things during sleep as eyes dialated for an eye exam or from the effects of LSD, thanks to voluntary and involuntary R.E.M., though it has been proven that sometimes dreams occur during non- R.E.M. This is just a residual effect of matching stimuli to memory fragments, which after a while, start taking on a life of their own in the process. I believe that consciousness was first started by sub-consciousness which was first started by involuntary and eventually voluntary R.E.M. In short, we were first in a sub-conscious state before we gained consciousness in life and it all started with involuntary R.E.M.
