This is for INDIANS. Please read through (if you have patience, and leave your thoughts. 68th Independence day is nearing! So what is there for us? Being an IT employee, I hardly find time to look around. In spite of work, personal grounds and other commitments I went for an outing. It was a hunt for an affordable property. I saw apartments all over, over and over. Any direction you turn in Chennai, you will find a flex board advert with a sq.ft rate and attractive offers. Weighing on my salary and expenses in near future I had a figure in mind within which I could find an affordable home. Agriculture is the Back-bone of Indian economy. This is what we would have read, but what is actually happening ? Either the lands are turned to residential plots or the landlords are selling the well for lorry water. What is mostly said as a minute walk from main road will be miles from reach. Either you will not find any houses nearby or in worst case, you will not even find a road nearby. Yet the price would put a hole on your salary account. Wondering what made guys to shoot up prices like this, there comes online media. When I call to contacts listed on online or classified adverts, they are brokers. They run a life similar to 18th Century American Gold rush. While it takes 1 year for a 5 lakh savings to yield 50000 rupees as interest, these Jacks can make millions in a month. God knows where they keep those money. When it is tough for a decently paid guys like me, I was thinking where could a normal person will live. Got a chance to talk to a juice corner guy who is a friend of my wife. He reaps 3000 a month. God! 3000! He has got 3 years of experience and he earns 3000! He must stand 16 hours a day to squeeze out the pulp ! For his accommodation, he need to bear 50% of the rent. A meager 50 rupees per day for food. While I was thinking what I earn is not enough, he is the person who turned on the real picture in my mind. Of course there will be millions on a city like Chennai who fights everyday just for a living or try to secure a future or strive hard to get better. If lands are getting converted as a commodity along with water which has already been swept off, I get a gloomy look on how sustainable is this development. Of course, I am not preaching and even I am one among the herd who is trying to get a home. But, I have got to think about others as well. On the west, our brothers are killing each other. Pregnant women were aborted, our mothers and sisters are being raped and our brothers are being beheaded. But, Chennai is cool as of now ! Even in India, how many news about rapes, robbery, molestation and legal issues were read and forgotten. What happened to our sister of Delhi who was brutally raped and killed ? These things are out of scope. I have got a client call next Monday and I have a shopping list with malls awaiting my credit cards. I am settled! Is there something wrong with the way of thinking! Nothing is an individual effort in a big society. While our lands, water and resources are being spoiled, cost being accumulated exponentially by a particular sector of the society, while living morale is spoiled, while there is Account-2 on every transaction we make... the biggest question becomes, Can we really do something about changing our future!!! ???? Come on buddy. You have got a daughter. It is risky in today’s society. A warning by my friend right away. Come on, I am not a politician! Not a preacher! Not an activist! I am just a citizen of India. I am having an urge to do something good for the betterment for the soil where I was born. Buddy, you will get an on-site next year. What is there then ? People change. Yet another remark from my friend. Nothing can change THE INDIAN within me. While the problem keeps building, who is to blame? Politicians? Some individuals? Terrorists? Well, No is the word! On a broad prospective, we are all People. I am very solid in my views that unless we change ourselves or try to do something better for the society or be honest nothing is going to change. 68th Independence day is to come! Useless movies on channels! Long weekend with pointless enjoyment! Outings! Dinner! Much more. Come on! We can enjoy and it is our right and source of relaxation. The point is are we getting dependent again ? Well I don’t have a fixed answer but let me put my view. After a hectic work week, we take up a regular weekend path. Trying to minimize efforts on everything we do, buy items online, spend on dinner with friends, malls, movies, half-sleep and late night chat. How about donating INR 500 for a charity organization. Let us create the real independence. Buy some crayons for orphan children! Let us light smiles! This is Independence! Let us be honest on all our purchases! Let us declare taxes to the full! Well let us sow the seeds to be honest in this generation. It is a long drawn process. But there would definitely be fruits in future. Truth triumphs! Let us not narrow down our thoughts on blaming politicians, pointing it out, debating or by religions.. Let us start getting independent! Let us break the religion band-wagon! There are enough number of killing in the name of religion from time immemorial! What started as a land search, enlightened me in many dimensions. Though I may not be 100 percent accurate or up to the point, on this wonderful occasion, I wanted to celebrate a real independence day by doing something good! Who cares about setting the Whatsapp DP to Indian flag. Let us bring out the real INDIAN spirit ! (if my writing has vested some thoughts in your mind, I would be the happiest person ever) Jai Hind, Venkatraman Srinivasan
