This is frightening! There is one major issue regarding contamination of ground water from coal seam gas extraction and fracking that is spoken very little of and that is the effect it will have on the Great Barrier Reef. There is very little known about "wonkie holes" which are fresh water springs that surface through the seabed all along the inshore waters of the GBR. There have been only a few studies done on them as yet but around 200 have been identified so far along the Queensland coast. I have had the privilege of diving on a wonkie up in Princess Charlotte Bay and the ecosystem and sealife surrounding it was amazing. What is not known is what impact will contaminated ground water from fracking and coal seam gas extraction have on the ecosystems of these wonkie holes and the Great Barrier Reef. By the time any contaminated ground water reaches these wonkie holes it will be too late to prevent any destruction of these ecosystems. This is just too much of a risk! We can not allow the Great Barrier Reef be destroyed by the insatiable greed of these multinational corporations in their pursuit of wealth. There are far more ecologically sustainable alternatives to power generation that if pursued will generate jobs, income and wealth for the people of Australia without destroying the environment and it is time that we sift through the lies, deceit and corruption of corporations and governments and do what is right for the environment and future generations of Australia and indeed the World.
