This is from an FMCSA press release today, supporting their current HOS rules and opposing a move in congress to roll-back the most-recent changes: The current Hours-of-Service rule includes common sense, data-driven changes to reduce truck driver fatigue and improve safety by reducing the maximum average work week for truckers to 70 hours from 82 hours and requiring a 30-minute break during the first eight hours of their shift. Is there ONE PERSON who thinks it necessary or appropriate to work more than 72 hours a week? I honestly dont think there is any other job where anyone would allow much less encourage or fight for this particular scheduling flexibility. OK, maybe farmers need to work more than 60 hours during peak periods - but does anyone else ever need to do this in this country? Truck drivers are routinely required to work far more than this, while filling out a govt-required form (daily drivers log) indicating they have worked far less than they did, just in order to keep their jobs. NO ONE should work more than 6 days / wk - 12 hrs / day - thats 72 hours. Isnt that enough?
