This is going to piss off some of you, no doubt. So know that Im speaking this because I believe it. I support Matt Stolhandske and his attempt to help the bakery owners in Oregon with their $150,000 dollar fine for not agreeing to do a cake for a lesbian wedding. Matt is serving and instructing in love, showing grace and setting an example. He is personifying non-violence, ubuntu, and I am proud of him. As much as it sucks, small business owners should have the right to run and operate their business however they see fit, just as we have the right NOT to spend our money there. Picket their business, write bad reviews on yelp, but for the love of God, DONT MAKE MARTYRS of them. They have the right to believe and exercise their beliefs how they want, as long as it doesnt physically violate someone else. I know this isnt a popular opinion, but Im not here to win a popularity contest. I dont believe we have the right to force our beliefs down their throats, the same way I dont believe they have the right to shove their beliefs down my throat. Just as with Chick-Filet and other businesses that have taken and anti-gay stance, I will NOT support them. But that doesnt mean they should be bankrupted and treated so hatefully. We are not supposed to return hate with hate. We are supposed to show grace. So feel free to disagree with me, call me names, etc... I support Westboro Baptists Churchs right to be assholes, just as I support the rights of a small business to turn away anyone it pleases. That is what makes this country different from others, and I fear this is a trend that will bring about a dark time in our countrys history.
