This is how I responded to an article in National Geographic titled Carnivores Dilemma......... While Robert Kunzig has presented a well-balance, informative look at the beef industry, there is adequate data showing that livestock production contributes more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than presented in his article. There is a World Watch Institute calculation that perhaps 51% of greenhouse gases emanate from this and supporting industries. Considering the carbon dioxide and methane releases, the enormous use of water and land to produce beef, it is obvious that the beef industry does major harm to the environment. Then, when considering the harms to our health and the suffering of the animals (more so pigs and chickens), then serious consideration should be given to not eating these foods. Additionally, many millions of Americans do very well eating no animal foods whatsoever; in fact, many research studies show less chronic diseases than the general population. Seems to me the conclusion to be drawn is that eating animal foods has no positive long-term value, while the only short-term value is that many people find that meat tastes good. Difficult to balance that against all the negatives involved in putting pieces of dead flesh on our dinner plates.
