This is in response to the many comments made to my post below: National Doughnut Day! What about National Cigarette Day? Smoking one cigarette a month won’t hurt you either; claiming moderation is obfuscating the issue. The hospital part was tongue-in-cheek critical of making a celebratory holiday about a dangerous food! I did not literally expect people to take their kids into hospitals, but we should not be celebrating doughnuts. Doughnuts are representative of the worst junk food and highly-processed foods are now over 60 percent of calories consumed by Americans. Doughnuts are likely the most dangerous food, even compared to other harmful refined overly-processed foods; deep fried sugar and white flour with artificial flavors and colorings. Why is it okay to show children pictures of black lungs and death from cigarettes, but not from junk food like doughnuts? Some of these angry responses, supportive of National Doughnut Day, just shows you how deep this problem in our country is, and why we have the one of the highest rates of cancer, diabetes and heart disease in the world. I guess National Soda day and then National Bacon Cheeseburger day is right around the corner.
