This is interesting. Theres a lot of truth in here. Especially the bit about perception as opposed to reality. Ive been thinking about racism as it pertains to politics. I personally know a number of people who are not racist on a personal level who nonetheless support policies which support racism. Thinking about this, I realize that they simply do not perceive the institutional racism in these policies. What they do perceive is that the policies they support appear to benefit them and the people they associate with. Its an interesting and destructive sort of political blindness that runs very strongly through our national dialog. Its true that the right have been most guilty of this in recent years, but Im starting to see the left attempting to counterattack with its own brand of extremism. Its the same sort of perception of evil or lack thereof. It starts, I think, with being unable to consider anything other than self interest. The left are quick to accuse the right of this and rightly so. But if you happen to disagree with anyone on the left you are immediately branded as a hater or phobic. That sort of dialog wins over no one. Its exactly the sort of fascist thinking that bothers me about the right. Compassion and liberty will sometimes appear to conflict with each other. The conflict is an illusion in the end.
