This is just wrong. The real cause of terrorism is the imperialist, duplicitous foreign policy of Western nations. Articles like this only serve to misrepresent the situation, vilify some Muslims at the expense of others, and further create sectarian tension. How would we feel if someone wrote an article saying Shia ideology is the root cause of the slaughter of civilians in Syria? Because trust me there is a lot of that rhetoric going around. When we try to explain away political problems with a strictly theological lens we ending up doing a disservice both to the political as well as the theological aspects of the situation. If anything, this makes a case for religious scholars avoiding political commentary altogether, especially on such a public forum.
