This is long and I apologize, but I shared a post from a friend - TopicsExpress

This is long and I apologize, but I shared a post from a friend earlier tonight that basically said If it was called Reagancare conservatives would vote for it. I challenged that premise and my friend replied to that challenge with a personal story. I would like to make a couple of observations in light of what was said. This is not personal or directed towards this friend; however, it is intended to challenge folks to think. 1. Yes I do believe it is very assumptive and judgmental to make the claim that as a conservative I am opposed to Obamacare because of the name on the bill and the presidents party affiliation. That is blatantly untrue. 2. My disagreement with Obamacare in no way shape or form means I lack compassion or I do not care about another persons health. Again, untrue. 3. I have never understood the willingness of Christians (of which I am one) bringing Jesus into the healthcare debate. This is not a theological discussion. One cannot make the claim or even infer that Jesus would support Obamacare were He walking around right now because its the compassionate thing to do. 4. The story of the Good Samaritan is flawed and here is why. The Good Samaritan willingly and on his own volition helped the man, we was not forced or coerced into doing so by the Roman government. There is no compassion in coercion. 5. As cold as this may sound, no I do not feel that anyone is responsible for any other persons healthcare outside of oneself or family. If that is the case why stop at healthcare, why should that argument not extend to housing, jobs, college or cars, vacations... etc. It is as logical as Bush telling us they had to do away with the free market system in order to save the free market system or Obama telling us that raising the debt limit wont increase our debt... what? 6. My disagreement with Obamacare in no way means I believe our healthcare system is/was perfect. It wasnt. Healthcare has not operated as a true free market system in decades. Open healthcare up to competition and capitalism, get the courts and the government out of it, and allow doctors to compete for patients and require patients to pay for the service at the time it was received and I can almost promise you we would not be having this discussion. 7. Please keep in mind that for every person who was not able to get healtcare (regardless of the reason) and now can because of Obamacare, there is someone else loosing a job or hours, a business cutting costs in infrastructure or R&D or not expanding, there is a small business owner having to decide to close shop or pay a huge increase, a family facing a monthly increase in their costs or a reduction in their benefit package or pay or a financial increase in goods & services as companies try to offset increased healthcare costs. 8. I disagree with the premise that our healthcare problems were a result of corporate greed. It might be one of the reasons (a minor one) but again if that is your argument you are now assuming the intent of another. Corporate profits are not a bad thing, that is why they went into business in the first place. 9. Misconception of the purpose of insurance. You pay for insurance not to get treatment for what you have but as insurance for what has not yet happened. When I was self-employed my insurance carrier would only cover my knees if I paid more money... why, because my knees are a risk with 2 knee surgeries. That is how insurance works. 10. Do you really want to intrust your healthcare to our government. Im going to share some more thoughts on this later.
