This is long, but I believe its worth reading. Another page was saying that they didnt like how Bolin suddenly had the rare skill to lava bend. And they wish there were some signs or something that pointed to him being able to lava bend. And how he was automatically good enough to fight Ghazan. This is my response to that: When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change. Such a true statement, and relevant to Bolins situation. Its the same with Korra finally unlocking her Airbending. She had just lost all of her bending abilities at the hands of Amon. And just as Makos bending was about to be taken, in an act of desperation (same as Bolin) she was suddenly able to airbend. In an act of desperation, at Bolins lowest point (life or death) he unlocked his ability to lavabend. Toph was locked in a metal box, and suddenly developed the skill to metal bend. Hama was going to kill Aang, and out of desperation, Katara developed the ability to bloodbend. Its the same with us humans. Women have been known to generate so much adrenaline that they could lift busses to help their trapped child. Meaning she hit her lowest point, and saved her child out of desperation. I could go on.. Also, there kinda were hints of Bolin lavabending, if you read between the lines. Given how much emphasis they put on him not being able to metal bend, and Su kept saying there was something great in him, even fans speculated he was gonna lavabend. And he wasnt suddenly good enough to fight Ghazan. Bolin is already an excellent Earthbender. He was besting Ghazan at the Earthbending part of the fight, not the Lavabending part of the fight. Bolin was just throwing some lava at him. But he was even gonna lose that battle, had Mako not stepped in after he shocked Ming Hua. They didnt suddenly make Bolin a superior bender to Ghazan. They just gave him a new skill that he clearly wasnt a master of. Ok, Im done.
