This is not an easy task and this can’t be left to Imams―this is a responsibility of all of us. If we can just come together, the people will have the strong interest in realizing the vision for this Community…They will find ways to do what has to be done.” —Imam W. Deen Mohammed “The imams are not to control the community. The people, the Quran, the Prophet Muhammed and the good sincere support and consensus of the people who follow that, they are to control this community. No imam is supposed to control this community. Have I tried to control this community? So, we are not to control the people. What goes in the community is the majority of the people. If they support it, then go! Is it acceptable in the eyes of G-d? Is it what Prophet Muhammed approved? Then, you should demand it of your people, even me. Say, ‘Brother Imam G-d approved this. It is acceptable in the light of Quran, in the light of Prophet Muhammed’s life.’ It is acceptable, it is good for us. We need it. We all know we need it. Now Brother Imam, what right do you have? You should be talking to me this way, if I am the one. Brother Imam what right do you have to deny us this?’ And you should replace me if I don’t submit to what is right? The Imam is nothing but a representative of the people. So where does he have the authority outside of that representation?”—Imam W. Deen Mohammed The world society is one big mold that shapes us in it. It has been told to us in scripture that Gd makes the human being. He creates the germ out of the male and it goes into the female and finds a place of rest. If it doesnt find a place to rest, it will never mature. But if it finds a place of rest, it will start to develop. It will start, to grow stage by stage until it comes into the complete structure or the complete design that Gd intended for it. excerpts from Imam Wallace Deen Mohammeds address delivered in Tallahassee, Fla., April 2, 1979.
