This is one of my favorite pictures of my mom. Dad took this - TopicsExpress

This is one of my favorite pictures of my mom. Dad took this picture in the front room of our house on Bannock Street. It was Christmas morning, and dad surprised all of us--the stereo, which was an incredible addition to our house, and moms coat. I was with him the night, when he was able to distract everyone and buy the coat for her. By that time, we worked every day together on the farm, and that night I helped keep everyones attention on something else, while dad took the package to the car to stash it carefully beneath other gifts. Times like that are what made Christmas so fun. My earliest memories of my mom were on the ranch. There was no TV, since the mountains surrounding our place prevented any possible television coverage at that time. At best it was a faint picture with static noise. The time was decades before satellite options. Instead mom worked much of the time with the radio playing. I remember songs from that time like Purple People Eater. It was mom, who seemed to initiate an interest which eventually became a passion for music in the early stages of my life. Days on the ranch had much to do, and mom was continually cooking meals for dad and the summer crew, who helped dad during key times. One of my favorite times was wash day, when mom spent the day with an old Maytag. The day was a long one for her, where she spent the day washing work clothes, rinsing them and running them through a wringer. Given the amount of time it took to do that and hang the washing on the line, she made a bean soup that I still crave. And of course she had bread baking and rice pudding on the stovetop.
