This is probably well-overdue but I suppose it was time I updated everyone. After my redeployment from Afghanistan in late 2009, I thought it was my calling to go into the medical field as a Physician Assistant and I put myself through prerequisites for the next three years to get into the University of Kentuckys program for that. After a very rough first semester with a GPA of 2.50, despite my hard work, I was not able to raise my cumulative GPA to a 3.0 prior to my clinical rotations (achieving a 2.91), with the difficulty of the program, teaching military history to ROTC Cadets as part of the Army Reserve, a 150 mile per day commute and a new baby girl. After a long and arduous battle with the program at UK, I was dropped and my future put into question. 75% of my classmates petitioned for me to stay and though this was not the outcome, I am beyond thankful for their support. I am at a crossroads in my life about which path to choose, whether it be medical in another direction (potentially with further education), possible government or corporate employment, or a completely different venue. For a while, I struggled with the feelings of personal and professional failure after UK but as I look back, I realize that the many times I thought doors were closing for me, they merely redirected me to where I was supposed to be. From Clovis, CA, to Roswell, NM, to West Point, NY, to Fort Knox, KY, to Fort Polk, LA, to Fort Riley, KS, to Shinkay, Afghanistan, back to Fort Knox and Louisville having traveled all over the country and the world serving with the best Soldiers I could have the honor of calling my comrades and friends in the most incredible missions I could have ever imagined supported by the best woman I could have ever hoped to marry, Maggie. Now, with our beautiful daughter, Aurora Claire, in our own home (with 3 furballs) in Louisville, an adopted hometown full of friends (and a little transplanted family!), I take pause to be thankful for all the wonderful people who have touched my life and whos lives I have had the privilege of making a difference in. With a history this rich in experiences, I am excited for the future!
