This is quite a big topic in the natural health world. How much protein to eat and where to source it from keeps many people up at night. I like to encourage people to think simple and keep it easy in terms of what to eat. One of the standards of good health that works for all of us is getting a majority of your proteins and nutrients from PLANTS, whether you eat meat or not. One of the downsides that Im seeing among people who are proponents of the Paleo diet is them eating a tremendous amount of meat daily. Then, sadly cancer shows up in their lives because of the skewed ratio of meat based protein to plant based protein. I like many aspects of the Paleo eating program but like everything these days, the context is often not there for proportion and balance. There were no traditional groups of people anywhere on this planet that ate meat at breakfast, meat at lunch and meat at dinner. It was just too difficult to catch it, cook it, preserve it, and then consume it 3x a day or more. If we take the ancient understandings of how much meat people would have access to and coordinate it with our modern day reality, its pretty easy to see we are way over in terms of meat consumption. A high proportion of plant based foods makes sense on every front because they are inexpensive, readily available, and easy to cultivate. Eating more plant based on a day to day basis makes sense and I encourage everyone to figure out ways to get more plant based foods in their diet.
