This is so sad to hear 😢 In Trust For Wayne Ahenakew & Cody Kay. As some of you may have heard during the holidays our family has received the absolute worst news. In the early morning of December 29th my uncle woke up to find that his family home started on fire. When he opened the front porch a blazing amount of flames came gushing out. He did all that he could and the third and final time he went back into the home to save my aunt and nephew he fell down the stairs. At that moment my uncle thought he should just stay on the stairs but he had a glimmer of hope that “ what if they made it out and are waiting outside for me, I do not want to break their hearts if I don’t make it out”. He used all of his energy to crawl out of his home. My cousin Cody jumped out of the window cracking his vertebrae. My auntie Donna and 10 year old nephew Teegan did not make it out of the house. Like many First Nation communities access to trained fire fighters are not within the Community. The nearest fire station is one hour away from my uncles Lake front home. When my uncle Wayne left the home he did not have his glasses, hearing aide or dentures. They left with the clothes that they were wearing. That morning their lives would make a drastic change forever. I am absolutely shattered on the way the events turned out. The lives that were lost that morning are not replaceable. They lost absolutely everything that morning. The beautiful home that they built together was destroyed in a morning. Unfortunately, as the home was located on a First Nation they did not have content insurance. I have set up a trust account with Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) to assist them in starting to re-build their lives. I am attaching a link if you are interested in making a donation please visit the go fund account I set up on behalf of my uncle and cousin or you can send me an email. There are two ways to donate to: 1. In person: go to any Royal Bank location and let the teller know that you would like to donate to the “In Trust for Ahenakew/ Kay” trust fund/account number 01594-003-502-431-0. Payments can be made in Cash, money order, certified cheque or a bank draft. No personal cheques will deposited into the trust account. Note: There are no tax receipts for this type of donation as indicated by Royal Bank. 2.
