This is so true. By the way, Im an excellent tipper, but thats because I know that is how these people are making their living. They only get paid $2ish an hour and a lot of that goes to paying their taxes and health insurance. Fact is, food at restaurants are one of the highest marked up items in the service industry, yielding huge profits for the company that owns them. However, despite this huge profit, their employees are paid so low. Even kitchen staff is lucky making anything more than minimum wage. Remember, your server is trying their best, and they arent your cook. It may not be their fault if something is wrong with your food. When you take your frustration out on them, youre denying their right to be paid for doing their job. Does your boss take money off your paycheck if your coworker makes a mistake? Or for any reason? No. No they dont. Ill also go as far to say that the difference in cost to you as a consumer from being a fair tipper, and being a good tipper is minimalistic. If you were going to tip $3 on your $15 bill, thats fair sure. Thats 15%. Lets say you tip $5 instead, thats 33%, a very good tip, and it only cost you $2, you were paying that $3 anyways. Lets say you eat out once a week. Tipping that $5 instead of $3 comes out to $108 over the course of a year. Thats how much it costs you to be tipping someone a fair amount for taking your order, refilling your drinks, and otherwise handling all your needs for an hour or so. Be kind to your waiter, it isnt their fault our countrys laws on pay screw them out of a decent paycheck.
