This is some character description so you know what to expect. I may or may not put up the parts later as I dont think its fair to the people who auditioned today, but well see. Thank you to everyone who has auditioned thus far, this is going really well and were very happy :) CASTING/CHARACTERS THE WRITER The play begins and ends with the writer. The writer is in part Indrajit’s alter ego, and in part an almost God-like figure who works to provide understanding. He is creating a play, and his play is written by Amal, Vimal, Kamal and Indrajit’s lives. Whatever disrupts Indrajit from having or constructing a personal narrative consequently prevents the writer from creating his play. This character is earnest, obsessive, inquisitive and somewhat comical. He observes and understands life and it’s progression, but more importantly, it’s devastation. AUNTIE Similar to an older sister or mother even, the Auntie is constantly wondering about the progress and well being of the writer, and is concerned and frantic, mainly because she cannot make sense of his behavior. She appears through out the play as the voice of rational reason, the voice that is exasperated by Indrajit’s existential pleas and tired of getting him to just leave questioning and “live” instead. She is the voice that combats existentialism, without necessarily affirming life. This character has strong elements of comedy, yet mainly acts out the voice of ‘happy-reason’ which challenges the deeply cynical and depressive. Frustrated, exhausted and mothering. MANASI Manasi interacts with the writer, and is essentially created by him, but she plays the metaphorical love interest of all the boys, and the different scenarios of marriage their fate takes them to. Manasi symbolizes those conventional, stable life partners who so obviously are necessary in men’s lives – yet Indrajit thinks otherwise. Multiple people will be cast for this role, and scenes will be divided up but homogeneity will be shown through costume and acting. Manasi must be delicate, feminine, strong and chameleonic. AMAL, VIMAL & KAMAL Amal, Vimal and Kamal maintain a certain air of conformity, which Indrajit breaks. Amal, Vimal and Kamal always speak after one another, almost as if they were the same person. Amal is less outspoken then Vimal and Kamal, and easily expresses his worry for the future, and is obviously insecure, but very observant. Amal, Vimal and Kamal must work well with each other and characterization will take place with distinct scene direction. Otherwise, there is a certain way in which they will appear to be the same. INDRAJIT Indrajit is the non-conformist who isn’t necessarily a revolutionary. He takes on many forms, from highly inquisitive to distressed, lost, depressed and robotic. This play is about him – the one who cannot figure out his life, but is also in essence about Indrajit’s alter-ego, the writer, who relays on him and observes him and to whom Indrajit directs his questions, those which prevent him from having a narrative, those inquiries which impede the writers ability to construct a play. Focused on body language as a means to differentiate from Amal, Vimal and Kamal. Must be played outwardly, and not overdone. Indrajit is not a cliché existentialist. He is a man perplexed by the prospect of the life set out in front of him, unsure of how to embark upon it, and why he should or must do so at all.
