This is the afternoon of our fourth Sunday at the International - TopicsExpress

This is the afternoon of our fourth Sunday at the International Church of Vilnius. It is amazing to think that many of our predecessors served for only four weeks – although our immediate predecessor served for five months. We are just getting started. Just . . . getting . . . started! People have been surprised and pleased when we tell them that we will be here at least a year, probably more. They long for stability. At church this morning we had five Egyptians, a new young student from Latvia, our young Israeli returned after missing two weeks, there was a young man from Nigeria who used to be a regular but now lives in Finland, and a man from Britain who is a regular but has been working in Beirut, Lebanon for the last several months. Plus the normal cast of Americans, Germans and Lithuanians – more than thirty in all, perhaps upwards of forty. Like any congregation ICV has people of differing faith-commitments. Some are very solid and mature; others are more tenuous and questioning. And of course we come from a dozen different backgrounds. Overall however we are very impressed with the quality of the congregation’s leadership. Good folks! After the service and morning coffee about ten of us went out for lunch. This seems to be a routine. Along with the Wednesday evening bible study it is a chance for friends to spend a little more time together. Later just the two of us walked up the street to a small ice cream/pastry shop for a double dip each of quality ice cream. Total: $5.50. Not bad! The weather here is noticeably turning toward fall: upper forties at night and upper fifties during the day with intermittent rain showers. The air is just different. It is starting to feel like fall. Finally, we were reminded this noon that tonight is the European Basketball Championship. Lithuania plays France for the “Gold.” The game starts at 9:00pm and we were told that no matter the outcome the streets will be full afterward. If we can stay awake that long (a mighty big “if” for JLW), we may go out front to see the celebration.
