This is the centenary of the outbreak of World War One. The USA may not realize this, because they only joined in about 3 years later. What have we learned in 100 years. Amazing how we ONLY talk about the needless waste of life AFTER these wars have finished. Well, perhaps WW2 was necessary, but the Nazis werent fought because of the Holocaust. Its ending was just a happy incidental consequence. Both the USA and UK were loathe to help Jewish refugees during the 30s. It was only fought because Hitler was taking over Europe as Napoleon had done, long before, and he was a far less sane ruler than Napoleon! Its always about tribalism, religion or power. Well, West Europe has been happily war free since 1945 but look around us now. Thanks to the illegal war of Bush (with Blair), 100,000 Iraqi civilians are dead and still the country is a basket-case. In Syria, you have a power-mad leader without a conscience fighting a bunch of ultra-extreme religious fanatics called ISIS. The world stands by and wont do anything because of the results of the Iraq war mentioned above. Goodness knows what is happening in Libya, but that isnt good... ...and of-course Israel, a country awarded to the Jews in 1948 after the Holocaust, despite the fact that Jews constituted only a third of the population at the time, now have a right-wing extreme nationalist, almost racialist government which cries crocodile tears while killing 2000 people in a walled area called Gaza. It may be on a small scale compared to some of the other conflicts, but, as a Jew, I expected better of Israel. They still keep trying to play the victim card, but that is history. Theyve become the bullying aggressor. No, Hamas is the symptom, not the cause. It will only end when Palestine has its own, genuinely independent country, free of all Israeli control. The most frightening of all, perhaps though, is Putin. WW1 started because of Kaiser Wilhelm II, jealous of British power, flexing his muscles all over Europe. Putin is a similar person. With KGB running through his veins, he is jealous of the USA and wishes to re-assert Russia as a global power. This could be the way to another major war. Hes much more dangerous than Khruschev ever was. That generation of Russians had seen millions die in WW2 and never wanted war again. So, we have Netanyahu and Putin, when we need another Gorbachev and Rabin. Lets NOT be commemorating more deaths in 100 years time.
