This is the example of the Desmodromic design. The valves are mechanically open and closed,so there is no valve spring to work against. The National Socialists had paid Daimlers development costs in the 1930s,however this engine was dependent on a regular maintenance (valve adjustments) to run efficiently. Fabio Taglioni of Ducati made it work in an motorcyle engine. The tower and tunnel singles are very desirable as collector items today. The L Twin developed around 1970 still lives on,it has the quick revving characteristics of a inline 4,with the low end gruntof a v-twin.
