This is the face of a mother who has to bury her 13 year old son. And tonight we heard from her for the first time. She is the mother of Andy Lopez who was shot and killed by a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy. “We want there to be justice. We want this killer to go to jail. He is sitting comfortably in his house right now, while my son is dead in a freezer, with seven gunshots. Andy was out playing with a toy gun that looked almost exactly like an AK 47. A Sheriff’s Deputy saw him and says he ordered Andy to drop it. The Deputy says the boy turned around and appeared to be raising the weapon and that’s when the Deputy fired. Andy was shot 7 times. This is what the family attorney said today: “What did you expect him to do when you called out, if not turn around and look at you? Obviously I wasn’t there when Andy was shot, but my guess is that Andy turned around thinking, “What?” The Deputy then had to make a split second decision about whether to shoot. From the pictures I’ve seen the toy gun looked VERY real. Authorities are also taught to keep shooting until the threat is over. And I have to believe that the Deputy who fired the shots has to devastated by what he did. Based on what we reported today though, it sounds like all of that doesn’t mean much to Andy’s parents. They are left with burying their son. They are also left with some very serious questions about what happened and why their boy was killed. All I can say is that my heart goes out to them and I hope that the investigations into what happened are thorough and complete.
