This is the oldest known surviving photograph taken in Australia. Its of Dr William Bland. It was taken 1844 or 1845 by photographer George Goodman in his studio at 49 Hunter Street, Sydney. Born in London, Bland was convicted in 1813 of murder (manslaughter) in a duel and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. In January 1814 he landed in Van Diemens Land (Tasmania). 7 months later he was moved to Sydney where he served at Castle Hill gaol until he was pardoned on 27 January, 1815. He went on to become a prominent surgeon, humanitarian, politician, outspoken social reformer and also an inventor. He died in Sydney on 21 July, 1868 of pneumonia, and was given a State Funeral.
