This is the reading from my last book that I will end the Hope, Joy, and Happiness presentation with... good choice? “The path on our journey is not always smooth and level. We will find hills and valleys, soft green grass and rocky, treacherous, and narrow footing becomes uncertain, yet we continue our journey. It would be easy to turn around and go back to the easy path, but deep within our heart, we know that turning around is not the answer. We carefully take each step on this treacherous path with some fear of slipping off the edge and into the cavern below. Our next step, the rocks on the edge break away, and we fall to our knees. One leg dangles over the edge; the other leg begins to slip too, so we reach up and grab a branch of a small bush on the side of our path. The blackness of the cavern below us seems to envelope us with the blackness of fear and hopelessness. We hold on to the branch, not moving a muscle for fear the branch will break and our journey will now come to an end. We gather our thoughts and try to dismiss the fear. We must not give up trying to find our way back to better footing. Looking down is not where the answer lies; it is the branch above that holds our hope, and our focus must be on it. The branch is sturdy and holds our weight, and we gradually pull ourselves off the ledge and onto safe ground. The branch can represent the hand of a friend who pulls us off the ledge and onto safe ground. The branch is our courage not to allow the darkness of fear overcomes us when we find ourselves in precarious situations. Our branch is merely a symbol of our internal values of hope and faith. So we question, “How strong is our branch?” Our branch is sturdy and can bring us off any ledge, if we hold on to it. We just need to hold on to it and never give up.” Excerpt from Inspire: A Year of Life Affirming Messages Douglas N Petersen ©2013 All Rights Reserved inspirevalues
