This is the second letter published in the Vero Beach Press Journal today. I submitted it to clarify my voter registration status. Corry Westbrook, Vero Beach Letter: I’ve met all requirements to represent District 8 in Congress A Jan. 12 letter by Patricia Lavins carried some very serious accusations about me and my campaign for U.S. Congress in the 8th District. In order to be legally registered to vote in Indian River County, one must move to the county with the intention of making it his or her permanent home. For those of you who do not know me, I grew up in Orlando, moved to Vero Beach in 1993, and have traveled back and forth between Florida and Washington, D.C., most recently in my role as federal policy director for Oceana. I currently live In Indian River County full time. I have a Florida driver’s license, local checking account, and pay bills in this county. I am legally registered to vote in Indian River County. The requirements to register to vote in Florida are clear. The laws were written to prevent people from voting in more than one location. A person does not have to own a home to be a legally registered voter. In fact, homeless people are welcome to vote here. A person must pick one place to declare as his or her permanent residence. Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution sets three qualifications for Congress: Each representative must: 1) be at least 25; 2) citizen for seven years; and 3) be (at the time of the election) an inhabitant of the state he or she represents. Unfortunately, false accusations are a common smear tactic in politics today and why many qualified Americans do not run for office. Corry Westbrook is running for the Democratic nomination in Florida’s 8th Congressional District. © 2014 TCPalm. All rights reserved.
