This is the third film in Richard Linklater’s meditation on love and romance that began with Before Sunrise in 1995 and continued with Before Sunset in 2004. The formula remains the same for this third film in the trilogy. Jesse and Celine now live together, although they are unmarried. The talk between the pair is both playful and flirtatious, but it also explores some more serious issues such as gender roles, frustrations of life and parenthood, aspirations. The film is by turns funny, sad, touching, poignant, optimistic and bittersweet. The dialogue offers some insights into how the pair have changed over the years, and this time it turns a bit more cynical and darker. Before Midnight has been beautifully shot by cinematographer Christos Voudouris, and the locations form a marvellous backdrop to the philosophical and existential musings of the characters.
