Time to tell you about my journey Into The Woods... written by Joelle Jackson 1. Good news first: the music is beautiful, the visual effects are wonderful, the costumes are interesting, and Meryl Streep is AWESOME! (but everyone knows that last part) The cast is talented beyond Meryl, including Emily Blunt, Chris Pine (i.e. the new Captain Kirk in the latest Star Trek films), and Anna Kendrick (best known as of late for the Pitch Perfect films). Its a very entertaining film that seems to make fun of the corny romantic scenes that you typically see in romantic comedies (or, rom-coms, for those of you that are film-savvy) by actually being OVER-corny (probably not a word, but work with me) which makes it funny. Nevertheless... 2. It has ZERO substance. Not that I expected it to have some sort of deep meaning, but there are storylines and characters that are not complete in any way by the end of the film. Additionally, there is a bit of false advertisement when it comes to Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf - while he definitely plays his part as only Johnny can, he doesnt get nearly as much screentime as you would think (and you can never have too much Johnny Depp, savvy? Said that word TWICE in one review, Im on a roll.) All that being said... Verdict: C+. Not great, not horrible, just average. The plus is for the music and the fact that Meryl just makes everything better. This is a lighthearted film that can be watched on Christmas (unlike Unbroken, dont do that to yourself, even though it was the better film!).
