Tonight Kila play Whelans as part of the venues 25th anniversary, Kíla celebrated their 25th year together last year. They charged on to the music scene like the feral children of O Riada and The Bothy Band.If tadition is the base camp, they wandered far off track by way of West African drumming, Punk and Pagent, searching for new sounds to retell our oldest stories. Mythologies must always be renewd and retold,they crave to be reimagined, they are stories that are forever becoming. Kila at their best, when charged with what in Flamenco is called Duende, are primal storytellers, bringing us forward and back again like Gatsbys boats against the current to a place we thought wed nearly forgotten. When we arrive there, washed up up on its shore, it is both familiar and oddly, thrilling new.
